CASE STUDY

PUP TALK!

An app that translates your dog’s behavior using AI and deep learning technology. Through this experience, dog owners can connect better with their pup and reduce unnecessary vet visits + anxiety.

2023 | Adobe Illustrator and XD

Why create a translating app for humans dogs?

Using AI/deep learning technology to read dog/cat body language for us will improve both the pets life and the owner’s experience of pet ownership.

  1. Based on past AI research, it’s possible that audio can be translated from animals.
  2. Behavioral and health issues are the most common causes of pets being rehomed. (APPA 2022)
  3. A recent study by Consumer Affairs surveyed 1,000 pet owners and found that 57 percent of participants aged 27 and 42 love their furry friends more than their siblings. (NYPOST)

PUP Talk not only records + translates your dog’s behavior: it analyzes and saves your dog’s data to be able to read their moods, routines, and most importantly, when something is wrong.

Creating PUP Talk

For my User Persona, I chose to create Caleb: a first-time pet owner who loves his pup but is anxious about his lack of experience.

LOGO SKETCHES

I wanted to emphasize the “translation” and “communication” aspects of Pup Talk. These are a few of my initial sketches.

FINAL LOGO

This logo shows how communication can help better connect the owner to their dog.

STYLE GUIDE

I wanted the branding for this app to be fun and playful, just like the pups!

PRODUCT SKETCHES

PUP Talk is a combination of an app that translates and a dog collar that collects data from the dog.

COLLAR

The purpose of the collar is to collect audio (for when the owner is not with them), and to monitor vital signs.

APP

Other than the audio/vital signs that the owner can monitor while they are away from their dog, the app also features a camera to translate body language. I specifically decided to omit the 24/7 house camera for the privacy protection of the owner.

USER FLOWCHART

I wanted to showcase one of the events that could occur while using the app. While owners can translate fun behaviors (playful, happy, etc.) and can also avoid unnecessary vet visits (dogs can act too!), this flow shows what happens if your dog does need help.

LOW FIDELITY

Made in Adobe XD, this is based on the user flowchart. It shows the audio, vitals, and camera features of the application.
